Michelle Doege: Poet. Writer. Teacher

My life has been spent seeking to honour this CREATIVE PULSE that lives inside of me, inside all of us. When I think of art, I think of it in the broadest sense – writing a poem or creating a broadside, yes, but also sewing a cloth cover for my couch or designing an altar from the slice of an olive tree.

I also seek to value and honour my experiences and truths – to speak boldly and authentically in my writing. The more we FREE OUR UNIQUE SELVES and OUR VOICES, the more we bless each other and the world.

Being a poet and writer is not a solo journey. My writing has been greatly impacted by many mentors and teachers. My goal is to give that back – to TEACH and NURTURE OTHER WRITERS to be bold in their own unique voice.

I am humbled and honoured to currently live, write and teach in Vernon, British Columbia, on the traditional and ancestral land of the Syilx people. I commit to continuing to learn, grow, and be an ally to/for Indigenous causes and peoples.

I am also thrilled that my first book of poems, ROOT OF LIGHT, is now released into the world! Please have a look at my new book, video-poems, or other recent PUBLICATIONS. My first love is poetry, and then, real-life stories or narrative essays.

I continue to teach poetry and creative writing WORKSHOPS in my local community, and mentor other writers online. While teaching at colleges and universities in the U.S. and Canada, I seek to engage young minds and hearts in writing, literature, and issues of gender, diversity and the environment.

My ongoing creative work involves writing my MUSINGS blog and creating POETRY BROADSIDES, that wonderful merging of the visual with a poem.
